             abstract = "This work presents some preliminary results from the study of 
                         regeneration sites in the tropical forest in Rondonia-BR. Leaf 
                         Area Index (LAI)and Basal Area were measured in second-growth 
                         areas with 2,3,5,8,12, and 18 years since abandonment. TM/Landsat 
                         image was used to generate a NDVI image and from which were 
                         extracted the values refered to each study site. The results 
                         showed a logaritmical relationship between age and the parameters 
                         LAI, basal area and NDVI, indicating a faster growth of the 
                         vegetation during the first 8 years. LAI were linearly correlated 
                         to basal area suggesting that it could be used as a reference to 
                         the biomass of different successional stage.",
